What: an absolute cracker of a 6 piece “Indie Rock and Psychedelic” band.
Where: Waterford, Ireland.
When: We’re hauling their asses to Whelan’s, Dublin Apr 21st.
Why: Because their lyrics are top notch, their track compositions are sophisticated, intelligent and commercial in sounding. As a live act they’re one hell of a top class rock outfit. That’s the why :)
The Dead Heavys tore onto the Irish music scene back in 2012 with a corker of a double sided A produced by Mr. Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream, The Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Kasabian, The Charlatans to name but a few) upon hearing the demos these boys put out.
The single Everybody in the Nite / Lazarus is full of funk and indie rock with a splash of the psychedelic and was played on our national air waves and devoured by not only Irish but UK music fans too who instantly took note of what was happening in this beautiful and sunny South East county of Ireland. Their tunes are so versatile and have been remixed by Gavin Boyce and Get Down Edits who are also based in Waterford. The cocktail of disco vibe that they have each created from The Dead Heavys sound is remarkably and deliciously oh so very good and whets the club appetite for more.
Since the release of that very successful double sided A, The Dead Heavys spent much of 2013 gigging and playing festivals including Ireland’s big one Electric Picnic and made their international debut performance at Croatia’s IN Music festival alongside The Arctic Monkeys and Basement Jaxx no less. It has to be said, these boys have class.
In 2014 they released two more smoking hot hook-laden singles in the form of The New Age Of Innocence and Uptight with a controversial video accompanying the latter.
2015 saw them release another single with video called, Liquidator which featured amazing vocals by Aisling Browne who impressed Jagz from the off. They returned to Hellfire Studios with Mr. Kooner and have been brewing something BIG since then which they will unleash fairly soon! They were chosen from 800 Guinness Amplify acts by deputy editor at HotPress, Mr. Stuart Clark and they won a PureMzine award for best single of 2015 with Liquidator.
Truly talented? Oh indeed they are. Have the staying power? Oh yes, we certainly think so.
Apr 21st, get out of the house and go see this Irish band at Whelan’s while you can still afford to see them. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed. In fact, we are sure of it ;)
Just some of the REVIEWS so far…
John Robb of Louder Than War – ‘The Dead Heavys deal a psychedelic-tinged guitar-pop that could easily grab a whole stadium full of post oasis fans as well as the charts.’
Barry Gruff – ‘The Dead Heavys debut EP is funky indie rock, tinged with a psychedelic edge that walks that ‘indie/pop’ line ever so well.’
‘The Dead Heavys continue to grow, adding further weight to all those attributes which stood them out from the crowd from day one.’
James Ward of The Irish Mirror – ‘With their daring and irresistibly catchy dance pop grooves Waterford schemers The Dead Heavys are fast becoming ones to watch on the Irish music scene’
Frank Hughes of GoldenPlec – ‘The Waterford band’s combination of keys, guitars and vocals evolves into a psychedelic indie stomp that is very easy on the ears. If you haven’t already caught them live, be sure to seek them out soon’
DublinConcerts,ie – ‘Somewhere between bands that attempt to hark back to classic rock days, and hipster bands that simply try too hard to be unique there’s a very slim line that manages to balance both aspirations but in a fantastic and effective manner. ‘
‘As they took to the stage, we were overwhelmed by the sheer talent and their wonderfully written and catchy songs….a joy to listen to and the band seemed to enjoy every second of their performance and they were right to. The Dead Heavys kicked the night off with such a bang and these guys are most definitely a band to watch out for.’
State.ie – ‘Some new music for you now and this is something pretty special…..This is ‘Liquidator’ by the Dead Heavys and it is as good a song as you’ll hear from these shores this year….’
